The Beatitudes

 

1.     Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

·        They rely on God for everything.  They are not attached to money and possessions. They share.

2.     Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

·        They mourn over sin and evil. They join in the sorrow of anyone who is suffering.

3.     Blessed are the meek, for they shall possess the land.

·        They are gentle people who treat others with kindness. They are selfless and serve others.

4.  Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

·        They fight against sin and evil and lead others to do good.

5.  Blessed are the merciful, for they shall be shown mercy.

·        They reach out to the suffering with compassion. They forgive those who offend them.

6.  Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.

·        They do God’s will in everything. They are holy and chaste.

7.  Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.

·        They are at peace with themselves, with others and with God. They prevent arguments and settle disputes. They work for justice, which brings out peace.

8.  Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

·        They take a stand for truth and justice even when they are attacked by others.
