September Beatitude:

Blessed are...

the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

The word “beatitude means “blessed”. In the fifth chapter of his Gospel Matthew tells us about Jesus’ new rule to help us become closer to God. The Chapter begins with eight blessings that will help us.

Poor people often depend on others and look to them for help. Jesus asks his followers to be poor in spirit.  This means that we do not think we're better than others, and we don’t make fun of people who have different or fewer gifts than we have.  We need Jesus just as everyone else needs Jesus.  We all look to God for help. We want all people to be close to God on earth and continue this closeness in heaven.

Do you think you are a better person than anyone else is? If your answer is yes, why do you think this way? What does Jesus say about this attitude?
